Cheap interactive board

When it
comes to learning what a interactive boards could be used for, the easiest way
is to use one. But this is not in the reach for everybody. A few years ago I
discovered a project that was called “Wiimote” It is based on the possibilities
that a Nintendo Wii controller opens, beside its main issue, controlling Wii
based game console.

The Wii controller
consist of one infrared camera and a Bluetooth communications interface. By
connecting the Wii controller to your PC thru the Bluetooth interface, your PC
get signals of the infrared picture from the Wii controller. By using a little
application called Wiimote the infrared image from the Wii controller is interpolated
with your screen image. You then use one infrared torch to project one infrared
point/dot on this image. The Wiimote application will make the infrared dot act
like your pointing device. Voila! You have an interactive board on any surface

Today I
found that The Wiimote Project has taken it a bit further.
They have made some new applications, which as far as I can see, makes it comparable
to Smart Board and e-instructions. Especially when you consider
the cost, the applications from Wiimote Projects becomes interesting. They have
now IR-pens for purchase. You can get it all from the Web shop at a reasonable
cost of about $130.- Or you
could download free software, built your own IR-Pen and purchase the controller
at your local dealer. smiley

Interactive boards in education.
I have used interactive boards in my
teaching now for about four and a half year. And I intend to share some
of my experience in this blog.

In using
ITC in education I also have experience in how to make students find their
goals on the www and the challenges this might be. This could also be a
collaborative issue for my blog.

And I think

The choice of Interwrite
board
was selected because of an outstanding offer of 7.000,- Nkr. To compare,
Smart board was at that time offered from 18.000,-Nkr.

The InterWrite Board is
more durable than Smartboard. The InterWrite Board’s surface is made of
aluminium. In fact it is a digitizer table hanging on the wall. Our students is
supposed to learn how to create and mend things and buildings, but some how
they tend to demolishing everything. Even the thought of hanging up a board
made of canvas like Smart board give me bad fellings.

At work my subjects is
building, construction and carpentry. Building and constructions is heavily
dependent on a good documentation. The documentation shall give information on
how the construction is mended together. And what materials is used.

In building projects, calculations
of masses and cost is also a matter of interest. We therefore make use of
calculation schemes like Ms. Excel and more specially designed programs for
this, like Entreka.

In Carpentry, ITC and CNC
have long ago entered the field. It is therefore important to teach our
students in these computer skills.

With the Interactive board it
is easy to lead students to right url’s on the www. Tis can help them find methods
on how to use new building materials. In this work of documentation sites like www.nobb.no and http://bks.byggforsk.no/
is essential.

An Interactive Board is a
very nice tool to show students how to act in their computing. They see your
acting on the board with your hand and pen as your mouse. You may annotate on
any active screen and your annotation is saved to your board file.

The board can contain how
many “boards” (pages) as you need, you just click on the icon for a new board.
You can navigate back and forward in your boards. And you may insert new boards
at any time.

After a lesson you save
your boards in a file, the file may be converted to a Ms. PowerPoint file or
acrobat reader file, which you can distribute to your students immediately, by
mail or LMS.

Drawing by DAC and CAD is
also very nice on InterWrite board because of its great number of digits on the
board it is very precise, unlike the more popular Smart board.

A 95” diagonal, Interwrite
board have a resolution of 46,500*83,000 registering points (Interwrite specifications), to compare a Smart board of
95”diagonal have a resolution of only 4,000*4,000 registration points ( Smart Board specifications). That makes Interwrite board about
240 times more accurate than a Smart board! Wich is verry convenient when drawing construction plans.

The
Interaction in the board makes your lessons more responding to your pupil’s
state of mind, at the present of your lesson. A premade PowerPoint presentation
is rather static and is not easily changed to mach pupil’s present thoughts.

In
the interactive board applications, there is no problem in plan lessons ahead.
But you also have the opportunities to insert any spoken idea or notion from
your pupils at any time and in any part of the lesson. This makes the students
more participating in building knowledge. And their ownership to the knowledge
is more subjectively.

On the
negative side interactive boards lack ability to have pressure sensitive colours
like chalks on blackboard have. What I mean is that with chalk the colour
intensity is proportional with the pressure you use when drawing.

This effect
is not jet present on any interactive boards I have used. And I will certainly miss
those effects if I had to exchange my blackboard with one interactive board.
